Virginia Marriage License Requirements
You may apply for a marriage license at any VA county clerk office where you plan to be married. These offices are usually located in the county probate court or circuit court.
There are no residency requirements. You do not need to be a current or former resident of Virginia. A Virginia marriage license is valid statewide.
There are no waiting period restrictions. You will receive your license immediately and you can get married right away.
You both must be 18 years old or more to marry without parental consent. You may be required to produce a birth certificate as proof of age.
If either partner is under 18, parental consent forms must be signed. You will need a certified copy of your birth certificate. In case of pregnancy when either party is under 16, the clerk authorized to issue marriage licenses in the county or city wherein the female resides shall issue a proper marriage license with the consent of the parent or guardian of the person or persons under the age of 16 only upon presentation of a doctor’s certificate showing he has examined the female and that she is pregnant, or has been pregnant within the nine months previous to such examination, which certificate shall be filed by the clerk, and such marriage consummated under such circumstances shall be valid.
Except in the case above, no physical exams or blood tests are required.
The license will expire 60 days from the issue date.
If previously married, the date of divorce or date of spouse’s death must be provided. Bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate.
